Westover Hills, located along the south banks of the James River, is nestled between Stratford Hills to the west and Forest Hill to the east. The neighborhood’s name pays homage to its historical connection to William Byrd II, who once owned a nearby plantation called Westover. Developed in the 1920s, Westover Hills is a prime example of an older Richmond neighborhood that has retained its charm and become a sought-after destination.
Significant construction began in the neighborhood after the completion of the Boulevard Bridge in 1925, providing convenient access from Byrd Park on the north side of the river. The majority of homes in Westover Hills were built between the 1920s and the 1960s, showcasing various architectural styles including Colonial, Arts and Crafts, Tudor, and Spanish Revival. These homes typically feature three to four bedrooms, although some larger residences can be found along Riverside Drive. Recent years have witnessed homeowners investing in extensive renovations and additions, incorporating modern materials and details into the neighborhood’s classic homes. Additionally, new construction has introduced Modern-style homes to the area.
The neighborhood’s design contributes to its unique charm, characterized by narrow, one-way streets that create a relatively dense community while minimizing through traffic and noise. Westover Hills is adorned with mature landscapes and old-growth trees, further enhancing its peaceful and secluded atmosphere.
Residents of Westover Hills benefit from the convenient Nickel Bridge (formerly the Boulevard Bridge), which offers quick access to Carytown, the Fan, and the Museum District on the north side of the river. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy nearby outdoor destinations, including river access points, hiking and biking trails, Byrd Park, Maymont, and Forest Hill Park. The South of the James Farmers Market in Forest Hill Park has become a popular attraction for residents from across the city and neighboring counties. Additionally, the revitalization of commercial properties along Forest Hill Avenue has contributed to creating a more walkable neighborhood in recent years.
